Strikes, bots and the price of a key

A note from the editor
Dear reader,
Thank you. When I started The Hotelier Times, I assumed the readership would be made up mostly of people who share my last name. Some of it still is. But I keep hearing from owners, GMs, brokers and lenders, including one night auditor who told me he reads us at 3 a.m., somewhere between the audit and the first coffee delivery. That might be the nicest compliment this paper has ever gotten.
This week is a busy one. Chicago’s strike has reached two of downtown’s biggest convention hotels, AI agents are turning into a booking channel, and the deals keep telling us what a key is really worth. We read the filings and the fine print so you don’t have to, and we try to tell you what to do about it on Thursday morning.
If something here helps you, forward it to someone who runs a hotel. If we got something wrong, reply and tell me. I read every note.
With gratitude and a fresh pot of lobby coffee,Nathan Snyder, Editor

Chicago’s strike reaches Hilton and Hyatt: what it means for your labor budget
Hilton Chicago and Hyatt Regency workers joined six struck hotels. The wage that settles Chicago will reset labor costs well beyond the city.
On Sunday, Oct. 18, hundreds of UNITE HERE Local 1 members walked off the job at the Hilton Chicago and the Hyatt Regency Chicago, two of downtown’s best-known convention hotels. They joined workers at six hotels who struck on Oct. 9, two days before the Chicago Marathon.
Key facts
- 8 hotels, 8,151 rooms struck since Oct. 9, based on Choose Chicago’s hotel supply list.
- 7,000+ workers at 46 hotels are covered by the contracts that expired Aug. 31.
- The demands: better wages, health care, a better pension, civil rights protections and safer workloads. In a 2025 union survey, 32% of workers said they couldn’t cover their rent or mortgage.
- The timing: October and November are the city’s busiest convention months, with AHA Scientific Sessions (Nov. 6–9), SC26 (Nov. 15–20) and RSNA (Nov. 29–Dec. 3) still ahead.
- The comparable: Philadelphia’s settled contracts include raises to $30 an hour by 2028 for non-tipped workers.
- The cost to owners: the payroll lands on owners, not the brands. At Seattle’s $31.03 housekeeper rate, room attendant wages run about $5.76 more per occupied room than the $17.53 national average, roughly $442,000 a year for a 300-room hotel at 70% occupancy.
